Whale watching
Close contact with
Orcas
As many as 600 Killer Whales (Orcinus Orca) visit the coastal areas and
fjords of Tysfjord and Lofoten every winter (Nov-Jan) as they follow the
herring shoals in search of prey. This is a unique opportunity to
experience the arctic winter and watch these fascinating mammmals in their
natural habitat. Mid-winter brings only twilight to this area, but a cold
and crisp day with the aurora borealis shimmering above impressive
mountain terrain is an ideal setting for watching the Orcas. You will be
visiting one of the most beautiful parts of the world.
In touch with the
wild

The boat is licensed to
carry 10 passengers with a warm downstairs cabin, and a skipper who has
spent most of his life in the fjord. You will embark and disembark at the
small coastal village of Drag, which is also an important centre for the
indigenous Sami.

Programme
We can collect you from Bodø airport for the three hours drive to AWE’s
base. Here, you will get a feeling for the great northern wilderness, and
enjoy a relaxing evening and dinner as we go through the itinerary for the
next three days. Weather conditions will obviously dictate much of the
outside activity, but the programme is flexible. Watching the Orcas will
be the first priority, though time will also be allocated to some walking
and visiting cultural sights. We offer a complete three-day programme, so
there are no extra costs. Whale watching can include time spent fishing
from our boat. The days catch, probably coalfish, cod or herring, will be
served as a meal back at AWE`s base.

Your accommodation will
be a traditional Norwegian “Nordland” house, which has been restored at
our base. Facilities are simple, though very comfortable and warm. All
meals and drinks will be provided. Evenings by the fireside, lectures,
and personal service will complete active days in the great outdoors.
