Arctic Wilderness Experience was established as a dog-sledging company in Spitsbergen in 1989. The company was relocated to Hamarøy/Tysfjord North Norway in 2002, where rambling and cultural activities provide the main programme.
Our vision is to give visitors the exciting opportunity to witness the majesty and beauty of Scandinavia`s largest wilderness region, as well as to enjoy and learn about its rich cultural diversity. Our guests can be assured of a programme that will inspire and challenge mind, spirit and body.
Leader.
For 25 years, Robin Buzza lived and travelled extensively on the high arctic islands of Svalbard, mostly by dog sledge. Having been brought up in East Africa, he developed an appetite for nature and wild places. This was followed by military service and a 12 week solo row from the Shetlands islands to Norway's North Cape, a journey that has still to be repeated. He was the trail blazer and Executive Officer for the 5th World Wilderness Congress (Norway), and was Secretary for the 1994 International Ecophilosophical Symposium.. Robin is a qualified practitioner of Plant Spirit Medicine. He has also worked for the Norwegian Directorate for Children, Youth and Family Affairs, and has published two books relating to his personal experiences ("Survive the Arctic Sea" and "Hvit Villmark").
As a Wilderness guide on Svalbard and running his own company for 12 years, Robin has worked closely with individuals and small groups of all ages and cultural backgrounds. He works regularly as an Expedition Leader for the Dutch polar cruise company Oceanwide Expeditions.
Co-leader
Robin`s partner Kitty Skapalen has always had a strong personal interest in the wilderness and in ancient lifestyles and values. After 14 years living in the Arctic, including 5 years in Spitsbergen where she met Robin, Kitty brings another dimension to the wilderness experience, linking her interest in people and arctic cultures. She has a strong personal belief that the lessons of the past should guide us into the future. Kitty worked for years as a travel co-ordinator for Air Mauritius and SAS Braathens, as well as a wilderness guide in Spitsbergen. The family is completed by 5 children and Laika the dog.
